This Privacy Policy describes how Music Theory Coach ("we," "our," or "us") collects, processes, and protects your information when you use the Music Theory Coach web, mobile, and desktop applications ("App") and related services at musictheory.coach.
We may update this policy periodically. The current version is always available at musictheory.coach/privacy. For material changes, we will notify you by email before they take effect. Continued use of the App after a material update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

2. Information We Collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your name (a single display name) and email address. We do not store passwords. Authentication is handled entirely by the third-party sign-in providers:
Exercise results
We collect your practice and exercise results (e.g., scores, levels completed, progress metrics) to power your in-app progress tracking and to improve the App. This data is linked to your account but contains no information that directly identifies you on its own.
Server logs and metrics
We collect server-side logs and performance metrics (e.g., request counts, error rates, response times) via Cloudflare Workers Analytics. This data is aggregated and not linked to individual users.
Bot protection
We use Cloudflare Turnstile to protect against automated abuse. Turnstile analyzes minimal request signals to verify that an interaction is human, without storing cookies or tracking users across sites. See Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Policy for details.
Session data
Like most web applications, we use cookies and browser storage to maintain your authenticated session. These are strictly necessary for the App to function and are not used for advertising or cross-site tracking.
Payment information
Music Theory Coach is a paid subscription service with a free trial. Payments are processed entirely by third-party providers. We never see or store your payment card details. Supported payment methods include:
Auto-renewal is always opt-in and disabled by default. You may enable or disable it at any time in your account settings or through your app store's subscription management page. See our Terms of Service for full subscription and refund details.
What we do not collect
We do not collect passwords, physical addresses, or payment card numbers. We do not display advertisements.

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and United Kingdom, we process personal data under the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract: to provide the App and its features as described in our Terms of Service.
- Legitimate interest: for service health monitoring and fraud prevention, balanced against your right to privacy.
- Consent: for marketing emails. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
- Legal obligation: where required by applicable law (e.g., retention of transaction records).
5. Third-Party Service Providers
We share data only with the providers listed below. Each processes data solely as necessary to perform their specific function and is required to handle it in compliance with applicable data protection laws. We do not sell your personal data.

6. Data Retention
Account deletion
You may delete your account and all associated personal data at any time from your account settings in the App, or by contacting support@musictheory.coach. Deletion is permanent. The only exception is records we are legally required to retain, such as transaction records for tax purposes.
Active subscribers
Your account and personal data are retained for as long as your subscription is active. Exercise results and progress data older than three (3) years may be permanently deleted on a rolling basis, as this data is no longer relevant to current performance. Your account information (name, email) and recent progress data are not affected.
Cancelled subscriptions and lapsed free trials
If your subscription ends without renewal, or your free trial lapses without converting to a paid subscription, your account and all associated personal data will be retained for up to one (1) year. After this period, the account and its data will be permanently deleted.
If you resubscribe within this one-year window, your account and data will be intact. If you resubscribe after deletion, a new account will be created and prior progress will not be recoverable.
Logs, metrics, and anonymized data
Aggregated server logs and performance metrics are retained as long as needed for operational, security, and product improvement purposes. Data that has been anonymized so that it can no longer be linked to any individual may be retained indefinitely.
Marketing emails
Email addresses on our newsletter list are retained until you unsubscribe.
Legal holds
Notwithstanding the above, certain records such as transaction records may be retained for longer periods where required by applicable law.
7. Your Rights
All users
Regardless of your location, you may at any time:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information in your account.
- Delete your account and personal data via your account settings in the App or by emailing support@musictheory.coach.
- Opt out of marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send.
EEA and UK users (GDPR)
In addition to the above, you have the right to:
- Data portability: receive your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Restrict processing in certain circumstances.
- Object to processing where we rely on legitimate interest as our legal basis.
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
As a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose.
- Delete your personal information (subject to limited legal exceptions).
- Correct inaccurate personal information.
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- Limit the use of sensitive personal information. We do not collect or use sensitive personal information beyond what is necessary to provide the App.
- Non-discrimination. We will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.
Categories of personal information we collect: Identifiers (name, email address); Internet or other electronic network activity (exercise results, server logs).
To submit a CCPA/CPRA request, contact us at support@musictheory.coach. We will respond within 45 days, with one possible 45-day extension where necessary.
Under California Civil Code ยง 1798.83 (Shine the Light), California residents may request information about any disclosure of personal data to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. We do not disclose personal data to third parties for their direct marketing purposes.
CalOPPA
This Privacy Policy is accessible from our homepage and from within the App. We do not track users across third-party websites for advertising purposes. Because we use only strictly necessary session cookies and do not engage in behavioral advertising, Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals do not alter our data practices.
8. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Music Theory Coach is intended for users who are 13 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to a user under 13, we will promptly close that account and delete the associated personal data.

9. Data Security
We use TLS encryption for all data in transit, enforce access controls on our systems, and rely on Cloudflare's infrastructure security for our backend. In the event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify affected users and relevant authorities as required by applicable law.
10. International Data Transfers
Music Theory Coach is operated from California, USA. Your account data is stored in a Cloudflare D1 database whose primary instance is located in the United States. When you use the App, your requests may be processed at Cloudflare edge data centers around the world as part of Cloudflare's standard network infrastructure. For EEA and UK users, transfers of personal data to the US are conducted under appropriate safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable. To ask about these safeguards, contact us at support@musictheory.coach.
11. Changes to This Policy
We will post any changes to this Privacy Policy at musictheory.coach/privacy and update the "Last Updated" date above. For material changes, we will notify you by email before they take effect.
